RESEARCH GRANTS & SCHOLARSHIPS / Research grants - final call for applications
Applications remain open for our 2021 research grants, including the Edmund Johnson Garwood Fund which supports research in stratigraphy with palaeontology, and in physical geology. To apply, you simply need to fill out an application form and obtain supporting forms from two Fellows.

RESEARCH GRANTS & SCHOLARSHIPS / Esri UK Scholarship
In order to encourage and support more students with a Black African, Caribbean, Black or mixed Black heritage to study geography and geoscience, Esri UK (a leading provider of GIS - Geographic Information Systems) have launched a fantastic new scholarship programme.
The deadline for applications is 7th April 2021.

GEOSCIENTIST MAGAZINE/ Website revamp and quarterly printed editions
Geoscientist magazine is undergoing a major overhaul. We will soon have a new-look, modern Geoscientist website that we hope Fellows, Corporate Patrons and others will be eager to engage with often. The revamped website will not simply be a digital version of the print magazine. Rather, it will offer interesting and varied content that complements the more traditional articles and reports featured in print.
The printed magazine is also undergoing a significant redesign to modernise its look and feel, while retaining the existing vibrant mix of news, science, opinion and events. Monthly issues have served us well, but we can no longer justify producing 12,000+ print copies of the magazine each month. Instead, commencing March 2021, Fellows and Corporate Patrons will receive a high-quality issue of the print magazine every quarter.

EVENTS / The role of subsurface research labs in delivering net zero: realising the potential of UKGEOS

EVENTS / Plastics in the Environment Conference
- Date: 15th February 2021
- Location: Virtual event
This one-day meeting will bring together researchers from a diverse range of disciplines (hydrology, sedimentology, geochemistry, Earth science, biology) to discuss the fate of plastics in terrestrial, freshwater and marine environments. It will also seek to foster conversation between these different communities to facilitate a more holistic approach towards understanding plastic in the environment.

Society Fellows can enjoy free access to over 60 e-books via the Library using an OpenAthens account.
Titles have been selected in order to make the e-book collection as broad as possible and to cover the range of interests and professional backgrounds of members. Topics covered include engineering geology, hydrogeology, structural geology, palaeontology, climate change and more. There are also regional geology titles, such as Geological History of Britain and Ireland and Geological Atlas of Africa.

PUBLICATIONS/ Earth Science, Systems and Society (ES³) has now officially launched!
We’re delighted to announce that our first fully gold open access journal, Earth Science, Systems and Society (ES³), officially launched on 4th January 2021.
The journal’s subject scope covers the broad spectrum of Earth science, and is headed up by Chief Editor Dr Kathryn Goodenough (British Geological Survey).
ES³ provides authors with a dedicated route to open access publication, and welcomes engagement from both new and previous contributors.
